Verneal Prater

Services for Mr. Verneal Prater, 82, of Briscoe, TX, will be at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at The River Church in Canadian, TX with Donald Hill, officiating. Burial will follow in Gageby Cemetery under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Canadian, TX. Mr. Prater passed away Saturday, December 25, 2010 in Canadian, TX. Verneal was born August 30, 1928 in Frederick, OK to the late Mr. Harvey Prater and Mrs. Hazel (Watson) Prater. He attended schools in Briscoe, TX. He married Juanita Jean Townsend on July 17, 1948 in Wheeler, TX. She preceded him in death on June 6, 2004. Verneal worked as an engine mechanic for Northern Natural Gas. While living in Skellytown, TX he was a volunteer Fire Chief from 1951 to 1961. He was a member of The River Church in Canadian, TX. He was preceded in death by one brother. He is survived by one son, David Wayne Prater of Amarillo, TX; two daughters, Mary Lou Carter of Briscoe, TX; Wanda Jean Prater of Amarillo, TX; three grandchildren, Jeanette Clayton and husband Frankie of Canadian, TX; Shannon Hatcher and husband Lance of Yukon, OK; Johnny Prater of Amarillo, TX; four great-grandchildren, Carl Lee Jahnel of Shattuck, OK; Deseray Marie Jahnel of Canadian, TX; Madison Bree Hatcher and Macie Brook Hatcher both of Yukon, OK. The family suggests memorials to Hemphill County Hospice, 1020 South 4th St., Canadian, TX 79014.
