Services for Mr. Leon Helm, 83, of Memphis, TX will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 17, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert G. Blum, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Memphis, TX. Leon passed away Monday, December 12, 2011 in Memphis, TX. Leon was born February 2, 1928 in Childress County to the late Mr. John Nelson Helm and Mrs. Lavada (Monroe) Helm. He attended grammar school at Gilpin Elementary and was a 1944 graduate of Estelline High School. He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II. He married Myrtle Harris on February 19, 1953 in Lakeview, TX. Leon was a lifetime farmer. He served on several boards such as, serving on the Estelline ISD school board, past president of Hall County Hospital Board, past president of Memphis Farmers COOP Gin, past president of Hall County Farm Bureau, president of Caprock Translator for 50 plus years. Leon was also a member of the First United Methodist Church where he had served on numerous committees. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Dude, George, Ralph and Bobby Helm and one sister, Betty Jo Helm. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Helm of Memphis, TX; two sons, Mike Helm and wife Margaret of Harker Heights, TX; John Paul Helm and wife Leah of Childress, TX; two brothers, Jack Helm of Fort Worth, TX; Aubrey Helm of Liberal, KS; one sister, Ruby Smallwood of Liberal, KS; five grandchildren, Jeff Helm and wife Kari of Houston, TX; Wes Helm and wife Brandi of Lesotho, Africa; Bo Helm and wife Hayley of Brookings, SD; Jansyn and Jaci Helm both of Childress, TX and one great-grandson, John Taylor Helm of Childress, TX. The family will greet friends on Friday, December 16, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hughs Funeral Home, 514 N 10th St., Memphis, TX 79245. The family suggest memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, 121 N 8th St., Memphis, TX 79245 or Hospice Care of the Southwest, 6600 Killgore Dr #110, Amarillo, TX 79106.
