Rosary services for Mr. Roman Rene Maldonado, 24, of Memphis, Texas will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2008 at First Baptist Church in Memphis, TX. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2008 at First Baptist Church with Deacon John Nino, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Memphis, TX. Mr. Maldonado passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2008 in Amarillo, Texas. He was born September 11, 1983 in Shamrock, TX to Mr. Reyes Maldonado Jr. and Mrs. Sofia Garza Maldonado. He was a graduate of Memphis High School and was also a senior at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, TX. While Roman was in high school he was the first and only person to make varsity football, basketball, tennis, track, baseball and power lifting as a freshman. In tennis he won the district championship, regional championship and was a state qualifier as a sophomore in doubles. In basketball Roman made all district honorable mention multiple times. In baseball Roman was all district multiple times with multiple play off appearances, also Roman still holds the Memphis batting average record for district 2A with a 510 batting average. In power lifting he received medals multiple times. In 2003 Gold’s Gym bench press competition Roman won the pound for pound strongest bench press. In track Roman’s 4X400 relay team were state finalist multiple times and he also medaled and won countless times in the 100 meter and the 200 meter dashes through out his high school career. In football Roman made the all district multiple times as both a linebacker and a fullback. Roman lead his football team to the playoffs as a junior and was team captain his junior and senior years. He also made the Amarillo Globe News 2A super team his senior year as a linebacker. He was invited and played in the Green Belt Bowl Classic. Roman also won dozens of local awards throughout his high school athletic career as well as being a member of Who’s Who in athletics. He was preceded in death by one brother, Roy Maldonado in 1989. He is survived by his father, Reyes Maldonado Jr. of Memphis, TX; his mother, Sofia Garza Maldonado of Donna, TX; one brother, Reyes “Cubby” Maldonado III of Amarillo, TX; two sisters, Dora Lomax of Childress, TX; Sammantha Yvon Maldonado of Donna, TX; two nephews, Mavrick Roy Cruze of Memphis, TX; Brandon Roy Perez of Donna, TX; three nieces, Micaela Noel Maldonado of Plainview, TX; Abree Lee and Aspen Reese Lomax both of Childress, TX and a host of loving family members.
