John Ramp

Memorial service for John Ramp, 75, of Canadian, TX, will be at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, March 1, 2014, at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Travis Allen and Rev. Sydne Allen officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Ramp Ranch. Cremation is under the personal care of Hughs Funeral Home of Canadian, TX. John passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 in Amarillo, TX. John was born July 18, 1938, in Pampa, TX to the late Mr. Jake Ramp and Mrs. Sarah (McMeans) Ramp. He attended grade school at Blue Ridge and was a 1956 graduate of Canadian High School. He then went on to receive a degree in education from West Texas State University. He also played football for West Texas State all four years which was a Division 1 school at the time. As a freshman, he was selected to suit up for the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, FL. He married Al’Louise Suthers on June 10, 1962, in Arnett, OK. John coached in Dallas and McLean and finished his coaching career in Canadian. He then went to work on the family ranch from 1970 to present. John was past Canadian Independent School board member for 12 years, Hemphill County Commissioner for 16 years and served on the Economic Development Council board. The Ramp Ranch founded in 1898, was recognized with the 35th Annual Family Land Heritage award for being in the family for 100 years or more. He is survived by his wife Al’Louise Ramp of Canadian, TX his daughters, Susan Ramp and husband Bob Wonacott of Canadian, TX; Beth Sturgeon and husband Britt of Canadian, TX; his brother, Jim Ramp and wife Bobbie Jo of Canadian, TX; his aunt, Pat Popham of Canadian, TX and a host of extended family members. The family suggests memorials to the Canadian Education Foundation, P.O. Box 438, Canadian, TX 79014.
