Mrs. Payne passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 in Childress, TX. She was born on May 26, 1911 in Lakeview, TX to the late R.S. Wansley, Sr. and Jennie (Billington) Wansley. She attended school in Lakeview and married Herbert D. Payne in 1927. Both ardent and thrifty workers, they had long and successful careers in farming and in the barber and beauty businesses. Active as a beautician until her health declined, Mrs. Payne still had numerous faithful patrons. She worked on as many as six generations of one family, working 73 years. Mrs. Payne was honored as Outstanding Older Worker of Texas on September 18, 2004 and was awarded a trip to Washington D.C., her first trip on an airplane. She was also commissioned a Yellow Rose of Texas on June 28, 2004 by Texas Governor Rick Perry. She was an active and longtime member of the Memphis Church of Christ, having given many years of service, from teaching Sunday School to preparing food for bereaved families. Her dedication is shown through her willing heart and busy hands. Her greatest joy was spending time with her son and her grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Garland G. Payne. She is survived by her son, David Payne of Lakeview, TX; one brother, R.S. Wansley, Jr. and wife Tommie of Lakeview, TX; three grandchildren, Kitsy Pepper and husband Wade of Memphis, TX; Buffy Buchanan and husband Brad of Canyon, TX; and Nicholas Payne of Canyon, TX; and two great grandchildren, Christopher and Shadie Pepper. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Westview Boys Home, P.O. Box 553, Hollis, OK 73550, or your favorite charity.
