Edith Mae (Hilgenfeld) Childress, age 89 of Memphis, Texas, passed away on Monday, September 22, 2008 in Lubbock, Texas. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday, September 25, 2008 at Fairview Cemetery in Memphis, Texas, with Johnnie Snider, Pastor of Travis Baptist Church of Memphis officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home in Memphis, Texas. Mrs. Childress was born on July 22, 1919 in Henrietta, Texas to the late John and Emma (Wilkerson) Hilgenfeld. A longtime resident of Memphis, she attended school in Quail and Hughes, Texas. She married Roy “Skeet” Childress on March 9, 1937 in Borger, Texas. They moved to Memphis from Snyder, Texas in 1978. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy “Skeet” Childress in 1995; her parents; a daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Jack Denney; two brothers, George and Johnnie Hilgenfeld; two sisters, Virginia Gosnell and Helen Fain; and one grandson, Lee Henigan. She is survived by two sons, Don Childress and wife Becky of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Lee Roy Childress and wife Patsy of Midland, Texas; three daughters, Barbara Dunn and husband Gene of Coweta, Oklahoma, Jackie Higgins and husband Mike of Alvin, Texas, and Betty Whisenant of Memphis, Texas; seventeen grandchildren; fourty great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Burkhalter of Las Vegas, Nevada; and numerous extended family members. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gifts of Hope Foundation, PO Box 1323, Midland, TX 79702.
