Graveside services for Mr. Bill Henry Varnell, 77, of Canadian, TX will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery with Ben Mathers, officiating and Rev. Monte Kreis, assisting. Burial will follow under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Canadian, TX. Mr. Varnell passed away Sunday, March 29, 2009 in Canadian, TX. Bill was born March 20, 1932 in Hollis, OK to the late Mr. Wornie Mack Varnell and Mrs. Vollie (Brackney) Varnell. He attended grammar school in Shamrock, TX. The Varnell family moved to Canadian in 1941 from Shamrock. Bill was a 1951 graduate of Canadian High School and then went on to attend West Texas State College in Canyon, TX. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Korean Conflict, where he served aboard the USS Cavalier. He married Cornelia Crumley on April 30, 1960 in Amarillo, TX. Bill was affiliated with his father in the family business of United Pest Control. He later went to work for Hemphill County until retiring on April 1, 1994. He was a member of the VFW Post #7469 and the American Legion Post # 56. He attended the First United Methodist Church. Bill was an avid fisherman, a Cub Scout leader and 4-H leader. Bill and Cornelia loved dividing their time between their home in Canadian and the mountains at Ute Park, NM. He is survived by his wife, Cornelia Varnell of Canadian, TX; two sons, Frederic Varnell and fiancé Michelle Shahan of Cleburne, TX; Howard Varnell of Canyon, TX; one daughter, Melinda Miller and husband Bryan of McKinney, TX; two sisters, Wanda Stevenson and husband Harold of Kingsland, TX; Betty Belk and husband James of Plainview, TX; two grandchildren, Will and Lauren Miller both of McKinney, TX. The family suggests memorials be made to a favorite charity. Viewing will be available at the First Christian Church Chapel at 402 Purcell Ave in Canadian.
