Evelyn "Granny" McWhorter

Services for Mrs. Evelyn “Granny” McWhorter, 97, of Memphis, TX will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Hughs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Rev. Daniel Downey, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home in Memphis, Texas. Mrs. McWhorter passed away Thursday, May 7, 2009. Granny was born October 6, 1911 in Glen Alan, AL to the late Mr. Isaac Tucker and Mrs. Nancy (Aldridge) Tucker. She attended schools in Glen Alan, AL and Newlin, TX. She moved to Hall County in 1924 from Glen Alan. She married John Harris McWhorter on November 29, 1929 in Hollis, OK. He preceded her in death on April 6, 1967. Granny worked as a seamstress for Tribble Cleaners. She was a member of Travis Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two sons, Frankie and Joe David McWhorter, two daughters, Betty Joyce New and Johnnie Kay Bice, nine sisters, two brothers, two grandchildren, Jimmy New and Larry McWhorter and one great-grandson, Heath Bishop. She is survived by two sons, Keith McWhorter and wife Barbara of Panhandle, TX; Gary McWhorter and wife Pat of Shamrock, TX; two daughter-in-laws, Virginia McWhorter of Higgins, TX; Delores McWhorter of Memphis, TX; 18 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
