Services for Rev. Judge Elliott Smith Sr., 93, of Memphis, TX, will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 12, 2006 at First Baptist Church in Memphis, TX, with Rev. R.H. Hamilton officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Memphis, TX. Arrangements are under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home in Memphis, Texas. Mr. Smith passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2006 in Memphis, TX. He was born on September 13, 1912 in Clarksville, TX to the late Mr. Alonzo Smith and Mrs. Versie (Austin) Smith. He grew up in Clarksville, TX and married Rosie Lee Minter on October 14, 1931. She preceded him in death on May 27, 1980. Rev. Smith pastored churches for 56 years. He preached his first sermon at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Memphis, Texas. It was here that he also preached his last sermon upon his retirement on August 29, 2004. Rev. Smith pastored in Shamrock for twenty years. He also pastored in Wellington and at Antioch Baptist Church in Memphis. He was a former participant in the Ministerial Alliance in Memphis. In addition to pastoring, Rev. Smith was also a farmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four sisters and three brothers. He is survived by six sons, Clemie Smith of Wichita Falls, TX; Alonzo Smith of Memphis, TX; Charles V. Smith of Amarillo, TX; Judge Smith Jr. of Wichita Falls, TX; Daniel Smith of Memphis, TX and Benjamin Smith of Amarillo, TX; four daughters, Verdia Steptoe of Wichita Falls, TX; Mae Newsome of Memphis, TX; Elizabeth Walker of Waco, TX and Helen Knox of Lubbock, TX; 35 grandchildren; 94 great grandchildren and 29 great-great grandchildren.
