A Memorial Service for Harold Winston Smith, 82, of Memphis, TX, will be at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 3, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in Memphis, TX, with Rev. Gary Boles officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home in Memphis, Texas. Mr. Smith passed away on Friday, September 1, 2006 in Memphis, TX. He was born in Chico, TX on December 28, 1923, to the late Mr. J.H. Smith and Mrs. Ethyl Skaggs Smith. At birth, he moved to Memphis, TX where he started a life-long love of the community, spending almost his entire life there. Harold married Bettye Sue Gibbs on December 22, 1949, in Memphis, TX. He was a graduate of North Texas State University. He served proudly in the United States military in Hawaii and Japan. Harold also served on the Memphis I.S.D. school board, was a member of the Lions Club and Toastmasters and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir. Mr. Smith was a farmer, an enthusiastic golfer, a member of the Memphis Country Club and an avid card player. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George W. Smith and a son, David. He is survived by the love of his life, Bettye; son, Russell and his wife Debbie and their children Christopher, Clay and Elizabeth; daughter, Karyn Nicolaou and her husband Tim and children John and Zack; and son, Matthew. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 121 N. 8th, Memphis, TX 79245, or the Fairview Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 265, Memphis, TX 79245. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of the Memphis Convalescent Center and the caregivers of Odyssey Hospice.
