Mary Elizabeth Johnson

Services for Mary Elizabeth Johnson, 83, of Memphis, TX, will be at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at First Baptist Church in Memphis, TX, with Rev. O.K. Bowen officiating, assisted by Rev. Daniel Downey. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Memphis, TX. Arrangements are under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home in Memphis, Texas. Mrs. Johnson passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2006 in Amarillo, TX. She was born on November 22, 1922 in Memphis, TX to the late Mr. Ottie Jones and Mrs. Gussie (Ayers) Jones. She grew up in Memphis and graduated from Memphis High School in 1940. She attended Texas Women's College in Denton for one year and married D.S. Johnson on June 9, 1946 in Memphis. He preceded her in death on November 11, 1977. She worked at the ASCS Office in Memphis for seven years and also worked in various offices at the county courthouse. She enjoyed people very much, especially while working at the Thriftway grocery store. She was in Club 51 and was an active member of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Johnson loved her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Hubert Jones and Chuck Jones. She is survived by four children, Liz Lobban and husband Birch of Amarillo, TX; Steven Johnson of Memphis, TX; Jana Monzingo and husband Terry of Amarillo, TX; and Sydney Salinas and husband Pete of Memphis, TX; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Jones and husband Bill of Memphis, TX; and two sisters-in-law, Starr Johnson of Memphis, TX and Kathryn Jones of Dallas, TX. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm on Friday, October 20, 2006 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Amarillo Alzheimer's Association, 1400 Wallace, Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106, or BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79105.
