Charles "Don" Schaef

Charles “Don” Schaef, 84, of Canadian, died August 16, 2017 in Canadian. Services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, August 19, 2017, at First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Lewis Holland, retired Methodist minister, officiating. Burial will follow in Miami Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian. Mr. Schaef was born November 22, 1932 in Higgins to Chris and Hazel Schaef. He grew up and worked at the Chambers Ranch until starting his banking career. He was a 1952 graduate of Canadian High School where he played football and went on to play in college. He spent a semester at Texas A & M University and then transferred to Panhandle State University. His junior year, he was drafted into the U. S. Army. Don returned home from the Army and began working for First National Bank in Canadian on April 1, 1959. Don married Charlotte Christopher on September 4, 1959 in Miami, and they made their home in Canadian. Don graduated from Southern Methodist University School of Banking after attending during the summers of 1963, 1964 and 1965. He was employed by the First National Bank in Canadian for 25 years, serving 13 years as President, and served as President of First Bank and Trust in Shamrock until his retirement. Don worked at the Hemphill County juvenile facility for several years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. He was chairman and served on the hospital board for 16 years. Don took great satisfaction out of being a hospice volunteer. Don was a member of the Rotary Club and took young men to the Ryla Camp for several years. He was named “Man of the Year” in 1984, was a member of the Canadian Rodeo Association, and was a member of First United Methodist Church. Don never met a stranger, loved playing dominoes with family and friends, and loved his miniature horses, especially Patches. He took Patches to elementary schools, hospitals and nursing homes to entertain frequently. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte of the home; a daughter, Sherri Shoaf and husband Jack of Hillsboro; a son, Charles Don Schaef, Jr. and wife Gina of Roland, Arkansas; a sister, Christine Sleeper and husband L. C. of Elkhart, Kansas; a brother, Joe Schaef and wife Janét of Canadian; five grandchildren, McKenzie Shoaf, Jack Wyatt Shoaf, Drew Fox, Ben Fox and Lizzy Schaef; numerous nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Michelle Schaef Rowden and husband Eric of Canadian; and special friends, Sharon and Marty Carr of Canadian. Memorials may be made to the Hemphill County Hospice, 1020 S. 4th, Canadian, Texas 79014; or First United Methodist Church, 520 Main Street, Canadian, Texas 79014. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-6:30 PM on Friday.
