David L Gilmer

September 9, 1945 — August 3, 2020

David L. Gilmer, 74, of Briscoe passed Monday, August 3, 2020 in Amarillo.

Graveside services will be 10:00am Saturday, August 8, 2020 at the Gageby Cemetery with Robert Meller, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.

David Leon Gilmer was born in Tucson, AZ to Edward Leon Gilmer and Eddie Maurine Miller Gilmer.  He was raised in the Wheeler, TX area.  David served with the US Army in Vietnam and then served with the Reserves until 1971.  He married Winnie Smith on September 1st, 1967; they were married 52 years. 

He worked as a tool pusher in the oilfield. While staying at the Veterans Community Living Center David flourished and enjoyed participating in all activities. His favorite things included singing, attending church, dominoes, talent shows, exercising, BINGO, telling incredible jokes and learning new things. He served as the Resident Council President while in the CVC and found great joy serving his community in that way. David always had love to freely give others. His legacy is one of selflessness, compassion and friendship. Everyone who knew him loved him dearly. He loved God, his family and his country he so proudly served.  He enjoyed a close relationship with his children and grandchildren. 

David was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David Gilmer II; 2 sisters, Carolyn & Millie Gilmer.

Survivors include wife, Winnie Gilmer of Briscoe; 2 daughters, Julie Shields and husband John of Canadian and Tonya Finsterwald and husband Bill of Mobeetie; 4 grandchildren, Brandon Finsterwald and wife Maggie of Stillwater, OK, Maddie Shields & Katie Shields of Canadian, Adley Gilmer of Wheeler; 1 great grandson, Jack Finsterwald of Stillwater, OK;  Daughter in Law, Shannon Gilmer of Wheeler; 1 sister, Tillie Snelgrooes & husband Daryl of Wheeler, 3 brothers, Mark Gilmer and wife Sue Ann of Wheeler, John Gilmer and wife Jan Renee of Dallas, Tom Gilmer of Amarillo.

Memorial may be made to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, 600 SW 11th Ave., Amarillo, TX 79101-3228
