David Tubb, 71, of Canadian, Texas stepped into his heavenly home on July 2, 2026.
A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, July 9, 2026, at the First Presbyterian Church of Canadian. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian. Viewing will be on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the funeral home.
George David Tubb was born on November 21, 1954, in Canadian to George Earl Tubb and Pauline (Polly) Shepard Tubb. David grew up working cattle and farming with his family on their ranch and competed in High Power shooting competitions with George, Polly, and his brother Gary. He was the Salutatorian of Canadian High School class of 1973 and winner of the Liske cup for best all-around student. David headed to Texas Christian University (TCU) to shoot on the TCU rifle team. He met some of his lifelong friends at TCU. He graduated in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in business. He lived in Weatherford, Texas for about a year and half selling used cars and insurance before moving back to the family ranch in Canadian in 1981.
David and Sue married in 1982, and he took on a new endeavor selling pipe that had slight defects which couldn’t be used down a hole for things such as drilling but could be used for structural purposes such as corrals, cattleguards, and fences. The pipe business was great while it lasted but good things don’t last forever David would say. In 1998, he built and opened Superior Shooting Systems, turning his shooting hobby into a business selling products he had designed and perfected for the shooting sports.
David had over 130 NRA national trophies over the course of his shooting career, holding many National Records. He was most proud of the perfect score he shot to win the 2004 NRA Long-Range High Power Rifle National Championship (600-1000 yards) in Camp Perry, Ohio. He did not drop a single point over the course of the match, making this his proudest accomplishment.
His most notable accolades are as follows: David was an 11-time National High Power Rifle Champion, and a 6-time National High Power Long-Range Champion. He had close to 30 NRA Silhouette National Championship titles across all four rifle categories. He had seven Sportsmen Team Challenge Championships, and he was a Rifle Masters Tournament Champion. He was the 1998 National Shooting Sports Federation Shooter of the year, the International Confederation of Full-bore Rifle Associations Palma Individual World Champion, and the Extreme Long Range (ELR) 3 shot cold bore World Record Holder at 2200 yards, recognized by the Fifty Caliber Shooting Association in 2018. He was also the 2019 NRA ELR Heavy Gun National Champion.
David served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church, was on the Canadian ISD schoolboard, and was instrumental in the planning and development of Mesa View Assisted Living facility. He enjoyed hosting the Presbyterian Church youth group on the rifle range at the ranch for shooting lessons.
David loved negotiating as in “making a deal”. Whether it was selling insurance, cars, pipe, or diamonds, he was always in for the game. Nothing made him happier than thinking he had the upper hand. He even tried to get a discount on funeral insurance. David also loved the adrenaline rush of hunting baboons in South Africa. He would say “You need to get the shot off in 3-seconds or you’re going to waste a bullet.” David was not only a world class shooter, but a generous person. He always answered phone calls and was willing to help, discuss, and problem solve whatever the gun or ammunition issue was. This was a very rare attribute for such a successful and competitive individual. He was always willing to share his knowledge and experience to help fellow shooters and to grow shooting sports.
David was proceeded in death by his parents George and Polly Tubb.
He is survived by his wife, Sue of 44 years; 3 sons, Taylor Tubb, Cannon Tubb, and Wyatt Tubb and wife Anna; daughter, Christie Stallter and husband Nate; grandchildren, Joshua, Ella, Elsie, Nadia, David, Elijah, August Taylor Tubb and George and Charlie Stallter; and his brother, Gary Tubb.
David was legendary with a larger-than-life personality. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
