Howard was born April 16, 1933, to Carl and Nettie Hyman Doughty in Marysville, Cooke County Texas. He always said his favorite time in life was “growing up on the Red River, spending time riding their horse with his sisters, hunting and just running up and down the river”.
Howard served in the Army from 1953-1955 during the Korean War.
He married Minnie Pearl Pinion on December 12, 1959. They were married 33 years, spending most of those years in Canadian, TX where they raised their children, daughter Doris Doughty and stepson David Westbrook. Minnie Pearl was a little bit overprotective of their daughter Doris. Minnie tried her best to make her a dress-wearing proper little girl, but Doris was a tomboy and a daddy’s girl. Howard loved pestering Minnie Pearl by helping Doris find adventure in her young life. He took Doris fishing some, but her greatest adventures were on motorized two wheeled vehicles. These adventures drove Minnie crazy. Howard bought Doris a mini bike when she was 12 and she graduated to a full-blown motorcycle (Kawasaki 125 enduro) at the age of 14 for 8th grade graduation. During that time he was having his own adventures of hunting, fishing and racing motorcycles with his stepson David, his sisters, brother in-laws, nephews and grand nephews. His marriage to Minnie ended in 1992.
Howard was greatly mischievous!!
Howard married Charlotte Ann Pugh on March 2, 1996, in Spearman, TX. Charlotte’s children were grown when they married, but Howard enjoyed getting to know them and Charlotte’s grandchildren.
Howard enjoyed every part of his life. He worked as a gas station owner, a welder, Tool pusher on a drilling rig, certified Ford mechanic at Hobdy Ford dealership in Canadian, and a refrigeration technician for Allsup’s Convenience stores. Howard loved working with his hands, he was able to figure out how to fix or build almost anything.
In 1992 he and his siblings purchased a lake lot at Lake Bowie. He and family spent a lot of time together working on the cabin. Howard and his wife Charlotte moved to Springtown in 2000 after he retired from Allsup’s. In 2004 Howard and his siblings spent many hours building a house at the lake lot. When Howard was not at the lake house he spent a lot of time working on building the New Hope Baptist Church classroom addition and helping members of New Hope with home repairs and maintenance. It didn’t matter what the weather was…..cold, hot, rain or shine he was always willing to lend a hand.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents Carl Doughty and Nettie Doughty, his first wife Minnie Doughty, his second wife Charlotte Doughty, stepson David Westbrook, granddaughter Stacey Ann Eubank, brother Charles Doughty, brother in-laws Calvin Cash and Gary Counts, and nephew Carl “Tutor” Cash.
He is survived by his daughter Doris Doughty Eubank and her husband Blain Eubank, stepdaughter in-law Mary (Sandy) Westbrook, his stepchildren Bonnie and husband Clarence Liff, Chuck Bennett, John Bennett, Wanda Ross and her husband Bob Ross, Tony and wife Teresa Bennett, Melvin Bennett, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Howard accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior as a teenager in the early 1950’s, then he re-dedicated his life to Christ and was baptized in the late 1990’s. His home church was New Hope Baptist Church in Boyd, Texas. Howard loved his church family and worked tirelessly for his brothers and sisters in Christ for 20 years until he lost much of his vision to Macular Degeneration in 2021 when he moved to be closer to his daughter Doris in Canadian, Texas.
