Jean Schoenhals, 89, of Canadian, passed away on April 3, 2026 in Amarillo.
Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery with Brother Alan Wilson, pastor of First Baptist Church of White Deer, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Director of Canadian.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, April 6, 2026 from 6:00-8:00 PM.
Jean was born on September 16, 1936 in Pampa to George and Lilly Fern Jones. Jean graduated from Pampa High School in 1955, while she was in high school, she worked for Modern Lumber Company and continued working there for a year after high school graduation. Jean then would go to work for Celanese. She was there 8 years before she married the love of her life, Garner Schoenhals. Jean and Garner were married on March 8, 1963 in Pampa. They have been married for 63 years and 18 days. Jean and Garner then moved to Canadian to farm and ranch his family’s land. She helped run the operation for 10 years before going to work at Texas Farm Credit. Jean would work for 2 years there before beginning an 18-year-long career at Interstate Saving and Loan where she became the Vice President and manager of the Canadian branch. During her time at the bank, Jean also obtained her associates degree from West Texas State University as a Certified Professional Secretary. In 1997, Jean and Al’Louise Ramp partnered to own Hemphill County Abstract. They operated the business for 27 years when Jean retired in 2024. Jean had a strong work ethic and enjoyed her careers over the years.
Jean was involved in many organizations such as Beta Sigma Phi, Texas Cattlewoman and a founder of CowBelles. While her children were growing up she was very involved in all 4-H activities.
Jean enjoyed shopping and buying for her family, not so much for herself. She was, however, always dressed to nines and very well put together. Jean was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandma. She was loyal to her family and friends and loved them dearly. She made every effort to make every game, stock show, and rodeo of her two grandchildren. In her eyes, they could do no wrong.
At the age of 70, she decided to take up golf with her good friend, Hollene Peery. Her desire to learn something new never stopped. Jean was an avid reader of mysteries and thriller books and an active supporter of Hemphill County Library.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Shirley Jones.
Survivors include her husband, Garner of the home; son, Keith Schoenhals of Canadian; daughter, Kelly Vigil and husband Karl of White Deer; two grandchildren, Karlee Vigil of Amarillo and Kason Vigil and fiancée Lakin Burrow of White Deer; and her cousin, Lilith Brainard and her children.
Memorials can be sent to Hemphill County Library and Locust Grove Volunteer Fire Department.
