Larry Dunnam

March 8, 1941 — April 10, 2022

Larry Dunnam, 81, of Canadian, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2022 at his home in Canadian.

Services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at Jones Pavilion in Canadian with Pastor Donald Hill, pastor of The River Ministries, officiating. Burial will follow in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.

Larry was born March 8, 1941 in Caviness, Texas to Monroe and Geraldine Dunnam. He attended Odessa High School, leaving his senior year to enlist in the US Air Force. He served from 1957-1961. On July 16, 1960 he married Loretta June Bohl in Walsh, Colorado, she passed away on January 23, 2005. After his time in the service, he began farming for his father-in-law for a few years. In 1963, Larry joined the Amarillo Police Academy and graduated. He worked for the Amarillo Police Department for 5 years in the Motorcycle Unit. Larry had a passion for law enforcement, in 1968, he entered the Texas Department of Public Safety Academy. He was in the D-68 class. Larry served as a trooper for 32 years, retiring as a corporal. After his retirement, he was elected as Hemphill Justice of the Peace in 2002 and served until October of 2021.

Larry was instrumental with Kenneth Osborne, in starting up the little league program in Canadian and Darrouzett. He helped coach many young athletes through the years. Larry was very knowledgeable in the rules, and he also served as the district administrator for the Texas Little League for many years.  Osborne Baseball Complex has one of the fields named Larry Dunnam Field. Larry and Loretta spent many hours at the concession stand at the ball fields and was known for cooking great burgers. He was an avid Canadian Wildcat fan even after his youngest son graduated. Larry lived a simple life and had a great sense of humor and could be a bit onery. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them. Larry also enjoyed fishing.

Larry was preceded in death by parents; son, Curtis Wayne Dunnam; 2 sisters, Jerry Curry and Gailyn Albritton; brother, Ronnie Dunnam; and a granddaughter, Becky Mills.

Survivors include his son, Rocky Lynn Dunnam and wife Kathie of Perryton; 2 daughters, Darlene Purcell and husband Bill of Canadian and Lucinda Russell and husband Tommy of Bushland; son, Larry Nolan Dunnam and wife Kimberly of Fort Worth; sister, Sammy Plant of San Angelo; brother, Brad Dunnam of Mansfield; brother-in-law, Harold Bohl and wife Elaine of Lamar, Colorado; grandchildren, Julia Buttry, Chris Ward, Tamara Russell, Rocky Shayne Dunnam, Sharelle Ward, Britanie Estrada, RoShelle Dunnam, Thomas Gipson, Jessie Gipson, Billy Joe Purcell, Danielle Miller, Cole Dunnam, T.J. Purcell, Donnie Purcell, David Russell, Rachel Russell, and Brooke Dunnam; 32 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be sent to Hemphill County Hospice, 1020 S. 4th Street, Canadian, Texas 79014.
